6 Steps to Overcome low Self Esteem and Negative Attitude

There are a lot of different aspects of your inner character that determine your success, but the greatest of these is self-motivation.  The ability to drive yourself and never give up as you push towards your goals is one that all truly successful people possess.

With the distractions of modern day life and the fast pace we all live in, managing your motivation is challenging.  Pushing through self-doubt, apathy, exhaustion, and the countless other negative mental landmines that lay before you can cause some to quickly adopt a, Why bother? attitude.
How do you clear your head of all this negativity? How do you push yourself when so many elements around you are encouraging you to quit? The following 6 steps can banish the negative attitudes and assure you accomplish everything you set your mind to.

Make certain you have a Clearly Defined Goal

There is little point to being self-motivated if you have nothing to work towards.  Be sure to make the goal realistic. Be sure you have a timeline in place for achieving it. Most importantly, do not let a single day go by without reminding yourself about what it is you intend to achieve.  Keeping your goals in sight at all times is one of the greatest motivators in the world.

Break your Goal Down into Simple steps

Every time you achieve one of these steps, it will add to your motivation to get to the proverbial finish line.  This makes the goal seem more attainable and helps you to mark your progress on the road to success.  If your goal is to run a marathon, start with a 5 mile run in 45 minutes.  Once youve achieved that, alter the distance and time to make it harder.  As each step is accomplished you will feel more motivated for the next step.

Dont let Arrogance make you Unrealistic.

Pride can be a good thing.  If you combine self-awareness with pride it can give you the self-esteem needed to do great things.  But if you have an overblown sense of pride it can lead to becoming easily frustrated when you dont get what you want quickly enough.  Nothing kills motivation faster than not getting something that you feel entitled to.  Decide right now that youre not entitled to anything and that everything you get in life is going to be the result of hard work and you will find your motivation will increase exponentially.

Live in the Moment

Yes, looking forward to a goal can motivate you, but live in the here and now.  Accept your circumstances for what they are and be determined to change them for the better.  Dont let errors in the past or dreams for the future occupy your time.  Instead, occupy your time with actions that increase your confidence and motivation. Trying to get the promotion at work?  Dont daydream about how great the job will be.  Do all the networking and hard work that you need to do in order to land that job.

Dont forget to Enjoy

Morale is perhaps the most important element in self-motivation.  Staying positive can help you deal with setbacks.  It can also give you that little extra push of energy that you need to break through the mental barriers that are holding you back.    Stress and laziness are the two greatest inner obstacles to accomplishing your goals.  Keeping a positive attitude is the best way to smash through these obstacles.

Value Momentum

Once you start, becoming self-motivated is like a train hurtling down a track.  As long as your path is clear and you are determined to not stop, you will get to where you are going very quickly.  So, dont spend three weeks working and decide to blow off the next three days.  Keep focused.  Keep working.  Keep moving forward.  Your goal is not coming to you.  You are moving towards your goal.

From Editors Desk

Self-motivation is not an easy thing to accomplish.  It requires focus, work, determination, planning and a healthy dose of realism.  But the fact that self-motivation is difficult and that many people have a short supply of it is the best reason to develop it.  Because once youve learned to be self-motivated, you can push yourself to accomplish anything.
